Bagan… did I speak too soon?

June 12, 2016 Derek

Well did I speak too soon about Bagan becoming too commercial, and spiritual tourism. Well today I did a bike-about. As mentioned on facebook, I would recommend the e-bike. It has absolutely no juice. Uphills you can walk next to it. But, after 7 hours of exploring Bagan on a bike... and e-bike did look like a good idea. The problem is Bagan is really 3 towns. New Bagan, Old Bagan and Nyaung-u. The latter is the most industrious and has the airport. Anyway, the first thing I wanted to do is visit the airport and take a sphere. On the way ... I was distracted by a temple. I humped across a field and then decided to go to the bigger on in the distance. Later on google maps to find where I have been it was called Thumbula Temple. Anyway, as I came pushing y bike through the brush, a tourism policeman came up to me. I thought he was going to tell me off. But he showed me the way through. Then I took some 360 photo spheres from a highpoint of a wall, not like other tourists who go straight into and up the temples. This strange behaviour of mine must have intrigued the policeman. He wanted to have his picture taken with me. In return I wanted the same picture from my phone, and also a picture of them together!

Man .. this lifted my soul. I showed him some of the photos taken .. and my day started good.  I missed this from my experiences down South, and this time for sure I recorded it.  I can really see Bagan becoming more interesting for tourists. It is a hot arid place though and far from Yangon. Also maybe that it is offseason and not a zoo with tourists, but I like this place and much of the countryside reminds me of my childhood in Swaziland. Anyway .. thanks for letting me share! 🙂
